Rules checked October 2026Are you still in scope for CBAM, and what will it cost?
Since October 2025, importers bringing in 50 tonnes or less a year of steel, aluminium, cement and fertilisers are exempt. Many are not, and the ones who are often underestimate the bill. Enter what you import and see where you stand. Nothing leaves your browser unless you ask for a reminder.
What do you import into the EU in a year?
Net mass, all shipments combined, for one calendar year. Leave blank what you do not import.
Are you in scope?

The dates that matter
- 1 January 2026
- Imports from this date count toward your first annual declaration.
- 31 March 2026
- Importers who applied for authorised declarant status by this date could keep importing while it was decided.
- 1 February 2027
- CBAM certificates go on sale.
- 30 September 2027
- First annual declaration and certificate surrender, covering everything imported in 2026.
What this does not cover
- Carbon price already paid where your goods were made, for example under China’s national ETS, reduces the bill. It is not modelled here.
- The certificate price is held flat across every year. It will not stay flat.
- A Commission proposal, COM(2026) 616, would slow the phase-out of free allocation. It is not law, so this uses the adopted schedule.
- Indirect emissions, precursor goods and the Commission’s default values follow detailed rules this estimate does not apply.
- An estimate for planning, not a compliance calculation or legal advice. Rules checked 27 October 2026. Confirm against the legal texts on EUR-Lex before you rely on a number.
The hard part is the emissions data
Every number above depends on embedded-emissions figures from your suppliers, and those are buried in their documents. Getting them out, checked, and into a form you can declare is the work we do.
